Cheap all-season tires and snow performance tires are a dichotomy.

There are many reviews available online comparing snow tires and all-season tires. There is a big difference in the performance of snow tires versus all-season tires on ice and in the snow. If snow performance is important snow-tires will give you a big fat edge. Tire Rack lists many snow tires in the $100 range in the 215 55 16 size.

Snow tires differ from all-season tires in several respects including tread design, rubber compound and size. Snow tires warm up and perform well at much lower temperatures than all-season tires a characteristic that works against them in warm weather....wear accelerates. The more open tread design and skinnier size typically used on snow tires helps with deep snow and hydroplaning a feature that works against the driver wanting high performance in the summer on a dry road.

I have used Michelin Pilot Alpines for several winters. They perform very well in the snow, they're quiet and they wear well. October is probably the best time to shop for snow tires.

For the summer I use Michelin Exalto's...they're quiet, they perform and wear well, and they're pretty good in the wet; but, they're not snow tires by any stretch.

Yes, I know that others may disagree with my bias that separate tires for winter and summer is the best way to go; however, my experience driving 50K miles/year summer and winter has convinced me.
