The 9-5 will be trickier than your old Volvo, but in my opinion it's not a difficult car to work on. There are some big things that I probably wouldn't take on myself like the alternator. But they don't really cause a lot of trouble on the 9-5. Most of the things that go wrong are relatively simple DIY fixes, and Saabnet is always here to help out with those.
A 2002 9-5 Linear... Not a bad choice, but if you could afford a 2004 Arc wagon, I would highly recommend spending a little extra up front on one of those. You wouldn't have to worry about sludge or turbo failure. The 2002 Linear has a Garrett light pressure turbo that lasts about 100k miles and costs about $800 to replace. The 2004 Arc uses a more substantial Mitsubishi turbocharger that not only provides 35 more horsepower, but has more or less proven to last the life of the car. I am not saying the 2002 is a bad car by any means, but if you have your heart set on it, I would strongly recommend having it checked out by a Saab mechanic. You need someone who knows Saabs. Good luck!
