Help! - Koni strut question

I'm halfway through the install on the Koni FSDs on my 2002 Aero wagon (rears done, ready to do fronts) and can't quite figure out what the white plastic split washer is for. As someone mentioned in an earlier post, Koni instructions are the WORST! The instructions for the rear showed both the split plastic washer and the plastic cap for the top of the strut body, but I used only the cap because the instructions for the fronts showed the split plastic washer covering the top of the strut body. Also, the instructions for the rear seemed to indicate that you would use one type for the normal ride height setting and the other part for the increased ride height setting. Problem was that there was only one set of each type in the box. The only thing I can think these are good for is to protect the rod seal if you every bottom out real hard where the bump stop might actually extrude into the strut body bore. I just don't understand why there are two types in the box - cap and washer- and why the washer fits so loose compared with the tight-fitting cap. The thing does nothing to anchor the boot and will just bounce around.

I'm looking for tips on what others have done when installing these, including what you did with the stock boot, if you reused the strut mount bolts with new OEM-style strut mounts with the self-tapping threads, etc.
