Serpentine belt advice Posted by Keith [Email] ![]() ![]() |
After reading pros/cons of the different serpentine belt configurations, I decided to convert my 2002 Aero back to the long belt. I didn't know that the dealer had switched to the short version when the belt was replaced (and really didn't know there was an option), but the car had really bad vibration at idle and has started making noise over the past few months. Turns out, the upper rear idler pulley bearing was shot. With 95K miles, I decided to replace both idlers, belt and tensioner because I didn't want to mess with it again for a long time. I've since driven the car over 20 miles in town since, with lots of idling in gear, and found that the vibration is reduced significantly and the noise is gone. Not sure how much the pulley and tensioner replacement had to do with it, but, prior to this repair, there was obviously a lot of belt "flutter" along the top, horizontal path while the engine was running, especially in gear.
