Sorry to hear but it sounded like that from get go.

2000-2003 (E, L and R) use the same short block and the 9-3 Viggen short block too.

The 98 and 99 block is superseded to the 00-03 block but I can't say what the different was in those but it doesn't matter because I don't think you want a used one from those/that year anyway.

If you are thinking of getting a whole used engine I would go with the late 2001 (from certain VIN) to 2003 in searching since you will get the newer head bolts torqued to spec from factory.

A new air mass meter should probably be in your budget as well.
