In the end I got the alternator in and everything on all the other repairs complete tonight and the car runs like a top! Oh how I missed my lovely 9-5 SE for the last 3 weeks and a bit.
No worries on the subframe drop that did not work for me to get the alternator changed. I think now I know how it could have worked. I was trying to drop the subframe by tilting the rear down, leaving the frontmost bolts in - but loose. I should have just loosened the driver side bolts and dropped all 3 bolts on the alternator side and tilted it down to that side. A moot point since it didn't take me long to do it the WIS way by removing the drive axle.
