After the overheating incident, did you confirm the radiator cooling fans are operational and confirm the serpentine belt (which drives the water pump) are in good condition? Sometimes with a stuck thermostat your able to gently tap the thermostat housing where the upper radiator hose attaches to get it unstuck for that driving cycle. Also confirm proper coolant level after running the heat on as the bypass valve will open and purge out additional air in the system.
