Last year, at my independent Saab Specialist, I paid over $1,500 for:
T-belt
Tensioner
Pulleys
Water Pump
thermostat
oil cooler cover
labor
These are not cheap parts, but the potential $6,000 bill for heads is a lot more expensive...
Since your WP has been in there 7 years, I'd replace it. If it fails catastrophically (like my specialist's did), the T belt can jump a tooth, or even worse. It's only a $100-$150 part, and the labor to get in there a second time and replace it would brobably be at least that much.
