Jonathan:
I know I prefer the Saab in terms of equipment, performance, styling and rear seat space, even though the Passat is the more practical choice in theory (although if you check the Consumer Reports reliability data, the 9-5 is "above average" while the Passat is merely "average"- unfortunately the data doesn't distinguish between the 4 cyl. "Saab engine" and the 6 cyl. "GM engine," and GM's track record with turbos is not good; on the other hand, the engine reliabilty for Saturn models equipped with a non-turbo version of this engine appears very good). So I'm conflicted, because I know I can pick up a nice used low mileage SE in the mid 20's, while everyone I know with a Passat loves it (although most haven't driven a Saab). On the other hand, what I really want is an Aero, and they aren't around used, and I'm having a hard time getting dealers to give me anything close to the deals that others have apparently gotten in the past for a new Aero (best so far is "around sticker" with $2500 cash back, and that is out of state-local dealers are acting like they never heard of the cash back incentive that has been discussed here and elsewhere). Not sure I'm comfortable spending that much money just for the additional performance, particularly given the painful depreciation on the new ones. Over the weekend, I will be looking at the numbers for leasing. Also looking at used 01 SE lease return.
