If if was ONLY the blend door shaft, I would expect you to still be able to get heated air out of the defroster (or maybe dash) vents.
Switched hoses will keep you from getting ANY heat.
I just switched my SE's back this weekend.
I bought the car used for my daughter, replaced the bypass valve last year. Had heat last winter. This summer, I redid several vacuum hoses, including the hoses at the valve. They weren't hooked up properly. Then, no heat this Fall. Switched the coolant hoses this weekend, all is good.
I suspect that previous owner had valve replaced, but coolant hoses backwards. Instead of fixing, maybe they unplugged the vacuum hose at valve, thereby disabling it, in the OPEN (to core) position ALL the time. I replaced valve, matching the wrong coolant hoses. Once I corrected the vacuum hoses, now the valve wouldn't allow flow to core.

p.s.
I've relaced the bypass valve twice on my Aero, once on SE. For last replacement, bought clamp pliers. Made Sunday's hose swap MUCH easier.
