2000, 9-5 SE, 125,000 miles
complete electrical failure about 1200 miles from home. the car died totally and completely. no electrical response, no lights on the dash, no electrical display. I was lucky it was at my mothers and not in the middle of Chicago, where we had been the night before. at first I couldn't even get it out of park. We tried to jump start, but that was no help. The jumper cables got warm and at one point we could see smoke from my alternator. (but during the charging I was able to get it out of park. later I refreshed my memory from the manual as to how to do this.)
It turned out there was a short in the alternator.
I lucked out and found a good independent mechanic in the Green Bay area, Automotive MD. He diagnosed the problem, replaced the alternator and battery, and got me running again. I quizzed him a bit before going there, he seemed to know Saabs. For being way a way from home I was very lucky.
