I've been driving this same 2.3 engine, in one configuration or another, through 3 9000s and now the 3rd 9-5. When I made the shift to the 9-5 and using Mobil 1 (I do all my own O&F changes, and have since Hell thawed out) I noticed right away that the synthetic oil turns 'black' very quickly compared to the dino oil I used to use (Pennzoil 5W-30). In all this time, I have never had a bit of engine trouble. Also, I have read since in a number of threads that this is nothing to worry about. The lubricant "authority" I have the most respect for is BITOG (Bob Is The Oil Guy), and the consensus among these folks, who include many triboligists, petroleum chemist, and others in the industry, is that the ONLY way to tell what's going on with your oil is a UOA (Used Oil Analysis). Most seem to use Blackstone Laboratory in Fort Wayne, IN.
