My Saab story, suggestions requested. Posted by Don [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Last October, I purchased (cheap) a 2000 9-5 2.3 LPT with what the seller said was a bad engine, 215K on it, and it sounded like a cement mixer, timing chain tensioner was well within spec, so I suspected the balance chain.
Thanks to someone who posted a video of a sound his car was making, I found that the water pump was the source of the noise, changed it, and it sounds great, the car has MANY new parts, this will be my son's first car, all local driving.
So, thats good for me, only problem is that I had already bought a used engine.
I just found a 1999 SE 2.3 with 78K on it that someone had bought with a bad head gasket, turned out that the block was no good and the owner gave up on the project, so the car sits with the engine out, just waiting for my engine.
My used engine has 119K on it, and the timing chain tensioner is beyond spec,(15.87mm) the pick up screen was somewhat clogged, but the sludge was not cooked onto it, just in a pile beneath it.
I already bought the timing and balance chains and guides for both, the timing cover and oil pan are already off, so I guess the head gasket should be done also.
I guess I just need to know what else everyone would suggest I do to this before I install it.
