I'm glad someone else got some use out of my post.
You are correct. The spring in there is way too forceful, and gives the metal plate (connected directly to the button) too much momentum. The spring arm crashes into a piece of plastic as the plate keeps sliding and the spring pops out of its slot in the plate. I shoved a chunk of an eraser in there to act as a bumper to keep the plate from sliding too far. But alternatively you can just hold the button in and release it slowly once it's in the up position.
I want to tear into a pre-2002 headrest and see what they changed/deleted in there. I never had any hint of this problem in my 2001 sedan.
