No connection that I have read about other than the same post you mentioned.
I can see potential for a causal relationship between transmisison choice and engine sludge. Assuming two things: 1) most sludge can be attributed to lack of regular oil changes; and 2) drivers of manual transmission cars are more attuned to automobiles and more likely to have maintenance performed.
But both assumptions would have to be tested. The shear differences in quantities of the two transmisison types in the US market may be the reason some think manual transmision cars are exempt from sludge, but really there are just far fewer of cars so equipped on the road.
