I'm kind of unclear about your question. If you could more clearly describe the dimensions of the artwork, that would be helpful. There is not all _that_ much difference in what a minivan will carry, and what your Wagon will carry with the rear seats folded.
If you want to carry a very wide framed painting that will fit in neither vehicle, I suggest a Yakima roof rack with a pair of their longer bars (60 or 72 inches) and a set of their adjustable canoe gunwale brackets to stabilize the load. This setup will be very ugly and threaten to poke your eye out, so you will need to remove the crossbars when you are not transporting something huge.
I would not be willing to travel at highway speeds with something that big on top, but it should be acceptable at city speeds. There would be an enormous amount of "sail area" that will try to lift the painting right off the roof. I don't imagine that would be very good for either frame or painting! Or roof, for that matter.
Other than that - how about installing a hitch receiver and buying a small flatbed utility trailer? Then you could use it for other chores as well, like hauling stuff for your garden. I think that's what I would do in your situation. There is a thread about Saab receivers just a little farther down the page.
Neither solution will be cheap, but the rack is less $$$.
