Thanks! to all who advised on my question to rebuild or buy rebuilt calipers for 1999 9-5 SE. I went with rebuilt calipers (Cardone, just because that is what was available). Brembo rotors, Akebono pads - nothing extraordinary, but it went together well and it's done! I checked out the 'FIX-My-SAAB' web site on brake job, and almost none of my fasteners matched theirs, but at least I didn't have to buy an E-20 socket.
With pads out of the car the thickness variation was confirmed: both sides wearing faster on inside pad, and RF wearing faster than LF. In fairness, with pads out, both sides were getting to point that inner pads were within half a year or less of being below service limit. There was significant hardened grease/dirt on RF slider pins.
Thanks for the great support this board offers!
