Far as I know, the leveling sensors are only for the headlights, not for the ESP. The mechanic needs to hook up Tech 2 to the car to determine what the problems are.
There is a sensor on the steering wheel that tells the ABS computer the angle of the steering wheel. The ESP uses this information to apply brakes individually. I don't know if changing the gearbox requires disconnecting the steering shaft, but, if it does, then if the steering wheel wasn't left in the centered position, it could lead to problems. I recall a procedure that must be used to re-align the steering shaft if it's removed from the car so that the ESP works again.
Good luck!
