I guess I largely agree with you on many of your points. Shorter model cycles can make good business sense. What suits my interests (as a lousy customer who buys older used ones + holds them a while) is not necessarily what makes good business sense.
That said, I'd like to see Saab be a little more like Porsche and a little less like GM/Toyota/et al. I think this especially makes sense under the new ownership: ditch the bland stuff, reinforce + foster the enthusiast following. Porsche is a lot more than good marketing - they are outstanding to drive + encourage a strong enthusiast following beyond the "handbag crowd".
From a superficial perspective, the "poor man's Porsche", the Boxster, is as long in the tooth as the 9-5, but it has been continuously updated + is still popular. The 9-5 2002 MCE did address structural improvements (among other things). I think the problem for the 9-5 in later years is GM penny pinched + to some extent botched the second MCE... And re AWD, Saab introduced a new 9-3 for the time frame you mentioned that could have been AWD (it is now)... just lack of foresight...
These are interesting times for Saab, that's for sure!
James...
