I have two wagons on the goo.
Yes, it could be the solenoid actuator. I had one fail in my MY05 wagon - in that case, the driver's door switch would click, but the hatch wouldn't open. I think the MY02 still has the ability to open with the key in the hatch (it disappeared in the MY05), like I can do with my mY99. If the key doesn't open it, then it would be a solenoid issue.
I have replaced the latch in my MY99 once, because it got stuck in the closed striker position, which meant the hatch was always open. However, a local dealer tech tried to assist me, and he broke the microswitch witin the latch. I went to an indy, who got me a used one, and unfortunately its microswitch was also broken. The symptom was the dash light on and the cargo area light on (for 15 minutes).
I ended up replacing the latch mechanism with a new one, from a dealer, but it was back-ordered for weeks!
Good luck,
