I don't think there may be any way out of this other than a new headlamp unit but I'm going to throw it out there.
About a month ago my LH Xenon started to stick on high beam. Rapid pulsing of the high beam stalk did not help, nor did shutting the car off. Drove around on high beam for a few days and then gave the lamp a good bang with my fist and the shutter came down to low beam.
After this the LH continued to get stuck on high beam until some open palm banging and potholes seemed to have brought it down again. Although the cutoff wasn't as sharp and when it did come down there was a section on the horizon where the light "spiked" above its usual level. I vowed to fix it and then just the other night on my way home from the office, I turned the car on and all was okay... the cutoff was sharp once again and I think (95% sure) that both shutters worked on high beam. I got off the highway 20 miles later and pulled the stalk just to try...and I made the following observation.....
1) the right shutter was stuck on high beam!!! This would indicate that this was an electrical malfunction all along.
2) the left headlight shutter stopped working. No noise from the solenoid on the left side....
The right shutter came down after a car restart but the left shutter does not respond.
Originally, I thought that there was a physical obstruction in the left hand shutter. Yes, I know banging it wasn't the best thing to do, but that's done now. But, the fact that the right shutter was stuck all of a sudden is significant; it would imply I'm dealing with an electrical issue.
I was going to pull the left light off, try to get a dentists mirror in there and see what's going on, do you guys think this is necessary now that the solenoid is silent?
I have studied film and video of the shutter in operation and am quite familiar with the mechanism, not much that could get in the way there... I'm stumped.
I read on a BMW board that some were able to procure the solenoid and solder/crimp that part alone, would require prying the light open but... with a projector type headlight, there is no reflecting surface to worry about.... this is obviously a different design from Saab but, I would send it out to a shop if possible... a new unit is $$$$$. :(
Car is 03 Aero 9-5, 124K on the odometer.
