I guess it depends on your climate whether studs are worthwhile, but up here (basically anywhere in Canada) they make a lot of sense. I've never had an issue with grip on dry or wet pavement (though they are noisier). On ice, the difference between good studded vs good unstudded winter tires is comparable to the difference between unstudded winter tires and all seasons. Worth it 100% for me. And this is based on comparisons of Nokian winter tires, studded + unstudded (and vs all seasons) on Saabs. Oh and the bit about tearing up the roads is irrelevant with new stud designs as well... that's a 1970's problem.
Unstudded winter tires can be pretty good, but to get good ice performance, they have to sacrifice some snow performance (hence the term "ice tires") to get all the surface area for siping. Also the soft rubber compound wears faster + need to be replaced very regularly. A tire designed for stud use can be designed to clear snow better + rely on the studs for ice performance. My experience with studded tires is ice grip the day you toss them is similar to the day you buy them. My experience with unstudded is less ice traction each successive winter, and tire test reports I've read out of Scandinavia found that as well.
Maybe there is a problem with your tires/setup, or maybe you need better tires? Studded Nokian Hakka5's are great! I can imagine inferior studded tires might have issues + not perform as well?
