Bedding in Akebono's?

It was time for new FR brakes and rotors so I went with the Saab 05+ OEM pads and Zimmerman rotors. The pads are Akebono and according to tire rack they recommend 500 gentle miles to bed in the pads. I have always been told to bed in my pads by doing intervals from 50-10mph multiple times times.
Does it make a difference 500 gentle miles or get them hot in a controlled way?
