If your insurance company has preferred provider shops in your area take it to one and let them open the hood to do a proper estimate. If you have rental car coverage go get one while the car is there, insurance companies hate that daily cost and will move faster to settle the claim. The adjusters job is to write an initial estimate and start the claim process. It's very rare that a car can be fixed properly for the initial estimate. The shop will more than likely find hidden damage that pushes it over the total line and from there it's just negotiation, remember that the adjusters job is to make you happy at the least cost to the company. Take the time to find out the replacement cost of your car, use local adds, Hemmings, NADA, and Kelly Blue Book to get an idea what you should expect to get for it. Takes a little time but with most companies it is worth it as it will usually add a nice chunk of cash to their initial low ball offer.
Just remember the adjuster is not working for you, the insurance company pays him to make you happy at the least cost to them.
