I agree that it's most likely just the thermostat that's gone south. However, in my research the first time this happened to my car, I found a pretty good number of people who reported just replacing the thermostat, still having a problem, and fixing it by replacing the sensor as well.
An OEM sensor is $12, it's in the same neighborhood of the engine as the thermostat, so I figure it's worth a little extra expense and work to avoid the possibility of needing to go back in.
