places the head slightly behind the glass. If anything the head will hit the cushioned C-pillar. In the outside chance that the passenger is leaning forward, if this is the case, then there is not going to be much to help him anyway. Even with curtain airbags.
Curtain airbags are mostly designed to stop shrapnel and to protect the passenger from hitting internal portions of the vehicle, not to keep someone from hitting outside, moving or fixed, objects (ie cars are trees). If side impact door beams, steel, and energy distribution doesn't protect them, how is a woven fabric bag full of air going to keep them from being injured (heaven forbid)if their head hits the tree?
These bags are not magic. They will protect us to an extent, but curtain airbags are not more than 5-6 inches thick when fully extracted. This will not prevent the head from impacting a tree or a speeding car. Keeping the object from intruding into the cabin is the main idea.
If a manufacturer can save money in the design of a car by not placing as much research in how the car will react in a collision, then they can certainly afford the curtain airbags, right? In fact, I would think that the curtain airbags would be the cheap way out (an externally (on someone else's nickel) tested bolt on part, instead of an internally tested design idea) All I'm saying is, don't judge a car by it's gadgets. Look at it's track record, it's design, and it's fortitude. In a collision, given the choice of being in a steel box without airbags or a tin can with airbags, I would take the steel box everytime.
Cheers,
Brian.
