Premium HK sound quality in wagon - question

This question is for anyone who owns a 9-5 wagon with the premium HK sound system. Do you find the volume of the rear speakers to be substantially less those in the front? At any given volume level, if I go from balanced to all sound in the front, the volume will increase, but if I go to all sound in the rear, I can barely hear the speakers. I've never had this problem in a sedan before. I've also never owned a wagon, so perhaps this is normal??? I haven't tried boosting the output level (as described in posts earlier this year), but I would think this would boost the output to both the front and rear speakers, and therefore not really help things.
I generally drive around with the back cargo shelf in a down (closed)position. Will this help the sound by cutting down the open volume area in the rear? Or in general should I just expect substantially reduced sound from the rear just because it's a wagon?
