I would suggest that your fiend pop the hood and start the car. If he smells gas under the hood, he might be able to spot the leak. There are only a few places I can think of that could be the source of the leak:
Flexible fuel pipe leading to the fuel rail.
Quick release fittings at the fuel rail.
Fuel pressure regulator.
O-rings on the injectors.
The system will retain pressure, so if he runs the motor and turns it off, he still might be able to see a leak.
