Hi
Thought I'd share an issue for your thoughts. My 1998 9-5 was stuttering very badly under load (at low or steady RPM's) after reaching operating temp. Only way to stop it was to apply more gas and accelerate through it. Felt like plugs but having recently (for the past 18 months) decided to get the car serviced by a local mechanic, I thought this would have been taken care of (I now travel too much and needed to be someone's regular Customer in case my wife has problems while I am away). Also, the stuttering felt way too bad for plugs.
I hoped it wasn't the DI Cassette (Australian prices for new Saab parts really have to be seen to be believed). Pulled the plugs (Some DI Cassette bolts (2) were loose) and smallest gap was well over 2mm with plug electrodes in a terrible state. I am amazed the car ran at all. I am a bit annoyed as I have invested 18 months building a relationship with our local guy, only to find that what I assume is one of the few things that are checked/replaced in a minor service these days (plugs) haven't been attended to. Car runs smoother now than it has for a long while.
While I was in there, noticed some fluid in the No.2 Spark Plug recess that I soaked up before pulling the plug. Smelled a bit like Olive Oil, very faint odor. I think it is whatever the coil for No.2 plug is supposed to be bathed in (I think it performs an insulating or cooling function, maybe both). DI Cassette still seems ok but not for long if that oil is really needed. Anyone know what the oil is, if it is safe to handle and if it can be bought. Also, if a leak usually means a break somewhere, if it can be repaired and refilled?. Seems a shame just to let the Cassette self destruct if I have caught it in time.
