This reminds me of working on a Classic 900. One of the snap rings that hold the tripod bearing to the drive shaft broke. It was a Sunday, I had no spare, and needed the car Monday...
Went to an auto parts looking for one. The "attendant" (can't call him a parts guy. Parts guys KNOW STUFF!), soon as I said Saab, said he didn't have anything.
me: "It's just a snap ring"
it: "Special snap ring"
me: "can I see your snap ring assortment so I can buy one?"
Matched it to the shaft, pay the price, and got out of dodge. The "non-special" snap ring worked just fine for many, may miles...
The dumbing down of parts counter people is horrendous. They can't help you without year, make & model, even if you're looking for something that's not particular to such.
I got spoiled at Spreen's Saab in Hackensack, NJ. Two of their parts guys, Lloyd (may he RIP) and Tommy knew Saab part #s so well, that I could rattle off a portion of the part description, and they already had the price for me... Tommy could rattle off part #s for C900 wheels faster than the computer...
