When you say upside down, do you mean pointing down? Does the needle move? Does it look like the needle fell off?
The guage can be activate with Tech2 to see if the guage works properly. That way you can determine if its the guage or the information going to the guage.
I did have a car with a faulty Mass Airflow Sensor that cuase the needle to stay buried on the vacuum side of the guage.
Heres how the guage calculates the boost.
The value shown by the boost gauge needle is based on the following: Trionic calculates the mg air mass/consumption and converts this information to a value between 0 and 255. Trionic sends this as a bus message "boost gauge". This value corresponds quite well to the engine torque.
