Well I recently changed the water pump for the 3rd time on my wife's 9-3, so I'm guessing the 4 cyl 9-5 models are similar. Here's the story:

1. changed with Hepu (bad idea)
2. one year after #1, replaced with Saab OEM.
3. 3 years later, replaced with Saab OEM

Here's what I found...#1 the Hepu is junk. Bearing shot, and pouring out weep hole after one year. #2, replaced with OEM, the connector pipe has a tab, and this tab fits into a machined opening in the block. I don't think you can install it if this tab isn't seated in the machined gap in the block?

Now, pump replacement #3. It looks like the o-ring going into the block was cooked. It was hard, and likely leaking. Also, the impeller shaft had a lot of corrosion, and the pump seemed "tight", like a seal was binding. Also, impeller is cast iron. I've only used Saab "blue" coolant and distilled water. The latest pump has a cast bronze impeller. I wonder if this will help with the corrosion issue I found on the previous pump? We'll see.

So, your connection pipe might be installed ok, but the o-ring might be shot. Hopefully they didn't cheapen on the o-ring material vs what was originally in the car?
