'04 9-5 Aero SW w/ 90K miles.
Project to R&R'd the serp belt this weekend (went back to long belt to decrease vibe) grew into a few other projects. Found a pretty good oil leak at the firewall side of the HG and the timing chain end. Pulled the valve cover to check the head bolt torque and discovered that the brittle as hell crankcase check valve was broken when removing it from under the valve cover clip. The car's been idling fine, but has sounded much louder (diesel-y) and performance has been really sluggish. I had chalked it up to cold morning starts.
It appears the check valve has been broken for some time. There was a fair bit of soot around the valve plus the surfaces at the crack were very discolored and somewhat melted or deformed.
Judging by comments on the board, everyone should check this valve every oil change. Anyway, while the VC was off, I replaced the timing chain top guide/pad. It was so brittle it broke in half removing it. I'm shocked by how brittle any plastic bit is on this engine. When removing the cover, I also broke the pronged hose retaining clip as well as the red plastic DIC connector clip.
Thanks to Jordan for the suggestion of using a wrench to slide over and depress the sides of the lower clip on the vent pipe to remove it. That thing is pure evil. Fortunately, you can get a glimpse of what you're doing through the intake manifold (I did it from the top). I didn't expect the new one to be hard to get on but it was almost as horrible.
Oh, and while doing the belt, I also inspected the top engine mount (toast) and crawled under to inspect the dogbone (smooshed to one side). I assume the mount under the battery is also gone, so I ordered a new one too. Lots of rubber and plastic wearing out well before I would expect. I wonder if this car will last as long as my old 200K+ mile 900SPG.
