Extra Sensory Perception Switch on our '06 9-5?

After all this time I noticed that our 9-5 has an ESP switch hidden under the turn signal stalk. The owners manual says that this inactivates the Electronic Stability Program but offers no other explanation. I suppose one should turn off ESP when you are running with the doughnut spare tire but are there any other situations where the switch should be used?
