The strut mounts are built like engine mounts. A dense rubber donut encased in a steel shell. The steel shell bolts to the top of the strut tower, and the center hole of the rubber donut contains a metal spool that is the anchoring point for the top bayonet mount of the strut.
I would expect noise similar to a bad motor mount. If the inner spool is crashing about within the donut it would cause movement of the front suspension and noise.
