Re: DIY rear pad installation Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: DIY rear pad installation, MontereyAero ![]() |
Sounds like these may be generic instructions.
1) Noise Insulator - some brake pads have a sheet of rubber on the steel backing plate to prevent the pad from chattering against the caliper. On some cars this may be shipped loose and needs to be adhered to the pad before installation.
2) Protective Film - I have seem pads with a layer of glue/goo on the steel backing plate covered by a protective paper/film. This paper neds to be removed so the adhesive will stick the pad to the caliper to prevent chattering.
3) Tabs - I call them the ears. These are the hook vaguely shaped ends of most brake pad backing plates. The early 1999 9-5's used a different rear brake assembly with square pads w/o the hook ends.
4)Caliper to Pad Contact Points - The Tabs or Ears slip into machined grooves in the caliper body. Grease the top edge of these grooves so the pads will move freely as they wear.
BMillar posted some photos from one of his D-I-Y brake jobs that will be a big help. You can easily see the layer of grease he applied to the caliper grooves.
