Like you I got my first automatic after 40 years of Saab's. My first Saab was a 1967 Model 96; my latest a 2007 9-5 Aero....with my first automatic. During the 40 years I've always bought new Saab's every 2-4 years.
I switched to automatic because my wife's then-new 2004 9-5 ARC automatic impressed me.
My observations: I've gotten as high as 36 MPG on the highway; 32-33 MPG is the norm. Performance appears to be similar, and more than adequate for those moments. Saab's automatic transmission has a reputation for better reliability than the manual, although my last 9-5, a 2000 Aero with a manual transmission went 280K miles uneventfully. My wife can drive the 2007 Aero automatic...and yes, that does mean something to me.
My personal opinion is that the manual transmission is heading in the same direction as the hand-operated choke and spark control. More and more automatics are offering similar gas mileage and the same level of performance.
