I had a similar noise.... I replaced the ball joints hoping that would eliminate the noise. It helped a little but the noise was still there. On Monday I had new struts/springs/sway bars/strut mounts/strut mount bearings/etc. installed in the front. Noise is now gone!
I didn't realize the strut mount bearing acts as as the upper ball joint, and that the entire strut rotates when turning the front wheels, until I saw the recent news blurb regarding the Hy-Per Strut on the NG 9-5. Dooh!! (I am slightly embarassed to admit this)
Maybe you have a bad strut mount on that side of the car, or maybe a bad strut bearing. But only 49K miles seems a little young for these to fail.
