...I was faced with same dilemma back in '07 when my '03 wagon was about to go out of warranty and I had that "new car itch". I loved our '99 and '03 but the new, little changed, 9-5 just didn't do it for me and it was time for something different. After scouting the wagon market-essentially MB, Audi and BMW, we settled on a very low milage '07 530XIt. Now, after 45,000 miles we still love it. Though the gas mileage (25-27 on the highway) doesn't equal the Saabs' and the Saab's seats were better, the BMW seems more substantial (as well it should given the price differential). Though BMW in North America (along with MB and Audi and unlike Saab) "discourages" using their wagons to tow a trailer, we've installed an after market hitch and I've found the BMW to do a much better job of towing the same trailers that we towed with the Saabs. So, if the bug is there, go for it. However, do it now because the new 2011 5 Series wagon will not make it to our shore.
