Oil Consumption Update or Gentlemen ....

Check your oil pan. In Feb. of last year I complained of an oil consumption issue which got worse after installing the PCV #6:

After living with this for over a year and having checking everything except the turbo, however unlikely on a TD04, I took of the exhaust to have a look see. The turbo was fine. Having dropped the exhaust, I decided to go ahead and drop the oil pan and check for sludge. Before removing the pan I noticed some oil dampness near the fly-wheel end of the engine. The biggest surprise was that many of the pan bolts were little more than finger tight and the pan fell loose before the last couple of bolts were out. After removal it was clear that there was little sealant and most of what was there was near the front. Since reassembly, there has been no oil loss and no smoke on hard acceleration.
Best as I can tell, the oil loss was from oil fumes leaking from the oil pan and could only be seen during hard acceleration. This also means that the PCV has not been working properly since who knows when. I did find a few coffee grounds in the pan and the pickup screen was ~10% blocked with gunk at 130,000 mi. I have most of the maintenance records prior to my purchase. No indication that the oil pan had ever been dropped. I still have an issue with the oil getting black so soon after changing. To look at it you would think I was driving a diesel.
