Reusing torque-turn bolts Posted by Keith [Email] (#1462) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Keith) on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 22:03:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It appears there are several torque-turn (torque + angle) bolted joints in the front hub/brake assembly. WIS does not indicate that these bolts should be replaced. What is the general consensus on reuse vs. replacement of these? Often, torque-turn joints are specified to achieve the maximum amount of bolt tension, even to the point of some permanent yielding (around the 0.2% offset strain point on the stress-strain curve). Or, the designer was trying to achieve a more consistent tension on the bolt that is less affected by friction variation, without actually tightening to the point of yielding. Not sure which is the case here since I don't know the bolt material spec or actual thread size. Just looking for advice on replacement since the bolts are fairly expensive.
