Well I have the not so frequently posted about p1181 mixture lean OBD II code on my 9-5 se v6 2001 edition. I am going to check all the vacuum hoses as there are a couple that look suspect enough. Also, I figure a pcv valve is a cheap enough swap out to also take care of while I am in there. I want to throw out the three symptoms I have noticed since the problem cropped up

1.) This is what I believe is the most telling symptom of the root cause: If the transmission is in park and I rev the motor to any rpm under 2,500 rpm, the engine will hold that rpm indefinitely and smoothly over three seconds drift up an estimated 200rpm and remain static from that point forward. Taking the engine up higher will result is a slow drift down to the highest observed hold speed of 2,500rpm. Putting the transmission in any gear position other than park will rectify the overspeed where held rpm is concerned, even neutral. Engine will not hold high RPM in neutral and seems to be constant at an estimated 800 rpm (normal since I purchased it). One other semi related note is that I frequently shift into neutral while coasting down very long hills at good grade (at least a half mile in coasting distance available and 5-6% grade minimum) and normally the engine holds between idle and just a hair below 1,000rpm. Since the onset of symptoms it hovers in the 1,200-1400rpm range and fluctuates with no perceivable pattern with respect to road speed or engine speed.

2.) Limp home mode is probably to blame for a 3mpg across the board drop in fuel economy which is standing at 25mpg with 80 highway miles a day, typical has been low to mid 28 mpgs

3.) Roughish idle at nominal idle speed. It might have gone unnoticed or ignored without the other two symptoms but its present.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where to poke around?

I'll post my findings when and as I get to it.

Onset of symptoms are best described as, fine until the CEL/Check Engine Light activated on the highway and then blammo, here is your current quirk.

Thanks in advance,

PPP
