I think some have managed to lift the engine out but I'm not sure. I think it still entails to first remove the transmission or at least loosen it and move it as much as possible to the left.
It is also one that managed to lift the car up high enough in the front that he could drop the engine transmission down and pull it forward out of the car.
It is certainly a lot more work and more complicated than the way we do it having access to a car hoist.
I don't have a lift table myself but use three floor jacks placed under the subframe and lift the car up away from the engine and transmission.
When lowering it back down I can easily adjust the position of the power train moving the floor jacks around.
