This is an interesting question.

I beleive mute will work without the Triad. The mute signal wire is a yellow wire on the back of the radio. I think the way that it works is to look for ground. If there is ground present the radio is muted, when the ground is removed the radio comes back on.

So the radio should mute if you ground that wire. Your handsfree kit should ground that wire. That makes me belive that it works.

I do not know what happens to Onstar if you ground that wire. Does Onstar turn on? I do not think so,(95% confident) but can not say for sure. What happens if your airbags deploy and the wire is already grounded? Will the Onstar call go through? Again I do not know.

Another thing that the triad does is attempt to amplify the Onstar signal to roughly the level of the Nokia phone. This prevents constant fidlling with the volume controls if you go from Onstar to Cell often.
