High RPM noise could be timing chain Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 12 May 2010 08:22:51 In Reply to: Tapping noise under full boost, turbostud, Wed, 12 May 2010 05:29:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If your timing chain has stretched to the maximum the tensioner can accomodate, you will hear a metallic engine noise as the loose chain strikes the top of the valve cover at high RPMs.
140K miles seems a little early for this problem, but it is relatively quick & easy to measure the amount of timing chain stretch. A new chain can be rolled-in while engine is still in the car if the chain guides are not excessively worn.
