Crank the ACC down to "LO" with the car running and see if the compressor clutch engages. You should be able to see the pulley and clutch if you're looking down and to the left from the front/center of the engine compartment--a good flashlight will light things up enough.
From there, you're checking the fuse, the relay and onward to see whether there's 12V at the connector where the clutch pigtail plugs in. That'll at least get you to the point where you can tell if those components are all right. From there, I suppose one could check resistance of the clutch coil, and so forth.
In my recent experience, a compressor on its way to seizing up took out the clutch coil. Thinking at first that it was only a clutch issue, I replaced the clutch and coil in situ. The 'new' coil lasted about five minutes, with the second clutch coil going up in smoke (literally). I had the system evac'ed, replaced the compressor with a used, low-mile compressor and clutch.
So far, so good.
