but physically the new ones are 1/2" longer than the originals and the trunk doesnt open far enough to gently pop them on. I even removed the plastic stopper up at the trunk to get an extra few mm of opening. not nearly enough.
they were so stiff I could not compress them ANY with all my weight on them against the driveway. I weigh 200.
I put the top on first and then after quite some time struggling for angles of force finally was able to place the female end of a long socket ext on the bottom plastic from the side and lower and hammer VERY hard to simultaneously pop the cylinder closed just enough (1/2") while directing it onto the lower ball. it aint pretty but works.
then I too afterwards realized..oh no. the cylinder is about 1/2 too long so will the trunk close? but it did and looks aligned OK. I even removed them, put the originals back on to compare the trunk alignment when closed with old and new and it looked the same. so I guess the originals maybe had about a 1/2" left when the trunk is closed. and maybe compressing the new ones ALL the way will make them not last as long? at this point I am moving on with more important issues.
I did my hood struts years ago and they were piece of cake so I know these were not correct length and definitely required to much effort to install. like I said. I should have sent them back but was determined to try it. who knows. maybe one will pop off one day. I am saving the originals just in case something happens. they also are not very smooth operationally. FAIL.
