Yes, there should be a bulb in there, IF your 2006 is the same as the 1999 I changed the bulb in, that is.
To get at it, prise up the plastic ring surrounding the shifter. You'll need some plastic (what the tools are made of) trim removal tools for this. Don't use a screwdriver. Pry it up all around, and it'll come off. Then you remove the shifter plate. There are four tabs that you'll see with the ring off. Once that is lifted up (it needn't be removed), you'll see the transparent strip that goes next to the "roll top" jalousie that covers the shift lever slot. Pull it out at the end towards the rear. You'll need a set of needle nose pliers to pull the bulb out.
The bulb looks a LOT like many other standard "wedge base" lamps the car uses, however, it is only 3 watts, not the 5 watts like most of the others. You can pick up a pair for a few dollars at your local auto parts. The Sylvania # is 2821, aka "W3W" (Wedge, 3 Watt).
