This is a follow up to prior posts relating to water into the car damaging the Twice unit -- a path of discovery that began with odd electrical gremlins fooling with interior lamps, radio and more, and then landing on the discovery of inches of water under a floating carpet, and a dead battery. Removing the water, and managing to start it, with a drive to the dealer 100miles away, where the Twice was replaced [and on disassembly by me, corroded....]
Leaving the Dealer after that replacement, I discovered the radio didn't work [and then in following days, on and off intermittently, a "radio locked" message intermittently. Also these -intermittent- problems:
cabin light on while driving;
no turn signal inside despite working outside;
turn signal inside but not turning chime;
driver seat adjustment not working;
dash lights not dimming, or not brightening fully.
and more...
The same sort of gremlins that occurred at/around the Twice's corrosion and failure from the water.
The dealer states the Tech inserted cleaner and dielectric goop into the female connector to the Twice [I forget what he called these]
I had suggestions, in here, that pointed towards an I-Bus fault; and leaned in towards considering a corroded connector handling that bus.
I returned to the dealer today, and discovered during that drive the radio unit did not work [at all, save for the red LED indicating the presence of a CD], and the Message unit displayed nothing. During the drive, the seat did not move, and the blinker did not chime; on startup, there was a message to check the theft system, but soon after, the MIU went blank.
On arriving at the dealer, shutting the car off, the restart had everything ok [save for the radio] The MIU worked, and for a bit reported no errors. Within a few minutes, it lapsed, and reported the "check theft system".
They whisked the car into the back, and 2 charged hours later, they reported this, following, and the source of my questions:
a) The seat relay module [1200$] was corroded or otherwise not working. A removal, and firm slap at the module got it working [i am thinking a corroded relay...], but it needed to be replaced. It is under the seat, near the Twice.
The radio was defective [2800$]. Merely removing the radio made ALL the other gremlins go away. Sliding it back in, brought them back.
So, now, my questions....
1) Is there any other explanation for why the radio's removal would clear the symptoms? I thought: maybe the fault is on the wire which goes from the Radio to the Twice, or on the Twice connector which services the IBus to the radio, or a defective ground that belongs to the Radio, or elsewhere.
But the dealer contends, and this sounds sensible, that the IBus which controls all these gremlins, and which gremlins are regulated by the Body Module or the Twice or whatever -- that the wire that is the IBus from the Radio to the Twice is not a direct wire, but a shared wire, soldered at splice points, from which run wires to the various modules around the car. Ergo, errant signals from the radio module onto that bus could cause all sorts of gremlins, and if fault was elsewhere, the gremlins would remain on radio removal -- the mere fact that removing the radio module cures them proves that the other contemplated fault causes are wrong.
Thoughts on 1) ?
2) If the fault is on the Radio, what exactly happens when water shorts the Twice that would make a radio or some part of it, go bad?
3) Can one plug by jury-rigging another radio's output [as in, another NON SAAB RADIO] into the plugs in the rear of the Radio Cubby hole ? [ie, wiring to the speakers....]
4) What is the consensus on material costs for a new saab seat relay, and a replacement radio ? What are the alternatives....?
Thanks to all who might answer...
