bcharliek's Sump Drop Posted by B Millar [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Brian (aka bcharliek) and I spent the better part of the day under his newish-to-him 2000 Gary Fisher wagon. It had 170k miles on it with the factory PCV (what was left of it, anyway)!! First project today was updating to PCV 6. All the old hoses were complete garbage: spongy, disconnected, or plugged up with oil goobers.
Next were the valve cover gaskets, which also went well. The underside of the cover had some gritty stuff built up around the timing chain, but we left it undisturbed. The cam lobes looked new, timing chain was tight, and the cam gear teeth looked very healthy.
Finally, we dropped the sump. The hardest part was getting the engine to shift enough so we could get the oil pan past the clutch housing. I wedged my 1/2"-drive socket wrench between the crank pulley and frame and pulled like absolute hell. The oil pickup screen was very scary. About 90% blocked, I would say. There was a passage about the size of a nickel for oil to actually get through. Very close save! We got everything cleaned up and back together so it should be good for another 170k!
Here's the obligatory "let it know how you feel about it" photo, and some others from the day for your viewing pleasure.
